Two journalists win awards to investigate environmental crime

GRID-Arendal and SKUP (The Norwegian Foundation for a Free and Investigative Press) today named the two winners of the Environmental Investigative Journalism grant for 2015.

B. Ebus will investigate the environmental impact of illegal mining operations by organized crime and illegal armed groups.

Karitu D.N. will examine the relationship between illegal timber logging in rural Kenya, construction companies and the charcoal trade, which is allegedly controlled by armed militia groups.

Each journalist will receive 25,000 NOK to help cover the costs of research, travel and other related expenses. GRID-Arendal is providing the grants as part of its Environmental Crime Programme.

The two journalists will be working on their stories over the next year. The information they uncover will be used in GRID-Arendal reports and published on line.

We wish the winners good luck with their investigations.
